The UrbnOUTLOOK Presents: Sam Whiteout

“Find what makes you, you and run with it because anything else is a waste of time”

– Sam White

Social Activist, Social Media Influencer and white boy with the shoulders to die for. That is none other than the notorious Sam White! He’s been taking Instagram by storm after his Shimmy videos for his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., went viral. I, personally, think the man is intelligent and an inventive dresser like myself. I thought that was all to it. Geesh Louise was I wrong!

I had the pleasure meeting Sam on last Thursday when he came to my college, Winthrop University, to speak on diversity and social injustices within Greek Life. The program was intriguing, informative and intellectually funny. Sam and Winthrop Greek Life students spoke about the tribulations when it came to being diverse in certain groups in the Greek Life community. Sam especially gave us an inside on how his college career went at Villanova University in Pennsylvania. He stated that he didn’t enjoy the oddly unwelcoming environment of his alma mater. He knew his passions weren’t welcomed and that campus had an act for not accepting ideas and people that were not like them.

Sam went into detail about his freshmen year and how his roommate was against everything. He had things stolen and or broken in his room. There were nights that were sleepless because of his roommates chanting racial slurs. He also had the misfortune of having “The Jew Lives Here” spray painted over his dorm room. Even in this trying time of his life Sam found the strength to use the negative energy as fuel to start the Tech Window group on his campus and join the Delta Eta chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Once he felt embraced and pushed to achieve from his brothers, he continued on with using his viral Shimmy videos as platform to do more! He says he asked himself “Do I want to be that guy who had that video?” or “Be that guy to use this platform to engage with social justice?” He felt it was his responsibility to help others and take this opportunity to do so.

I was thoroughly impressed by the way the man spoke with such passion and intellect about what he loves and felt honored that he granted Urbnwood with a brief interview! Of course, I had to ask him about his style. A no brainer there!

The UrbnOUTLOOK: SamWhiteout Interview

UW: How is it being “Instagram Famous”?

Sam: I don’t have my notifications turned on and it’s not about the likes.

UW: Where does your style derive from?

Sam: I see cool shit and try to do it. I can’t afford famous brands so I try to make it work.

UW: Where are your favorite places to shop?

Sam: Korea! 100%! Went there in 2013 and came back with a suitcase full of new clothes

UW: Last Question. Promise. What’s next for Sam White?

Sam: Trying to get better. I haven’t reached my full potential of what I want to do.

UW: And what exactly is it that you want to do Sam? Sorry I snuck that one in there.

Sam: It’s cool. *chuckles and smiles*  I  want to help people become better!

Final Words:

Pose, Charismatic and sheer brilliance is what Sam has and I truly mean that. NO BS! A very humble gentlemen indeed. One day our paths may cross again but until then I appreciate the 5 mins I was granted to speak to him.

The one I learned the most from this event is that you should truly follow whatever it is that makes you happy. Take it, run with it and excel in it. We all know that that’s easier said than done but nonetheless still possible. Keeping dream Urbners! We have plenty more to do in this world.

Be Great, Be Stylish, Be Urbnwood!
